ORAN-TWIN team successfully developed a machine learning-based xApp for energy optimization in O-RAN networks. The system intelligently manages Radio Units (RUs) by putting them into energy-saving modes (e.g., sleep mode) to reduce power consumption while maintaining network performance. The solution considers multiple network KPIs including user placement, cell locations, outage rates, and power consumption per cell. In a simulation environment with 6 RUs and 20 mobile users, the energy-saving xApp demonstrated significant power reduction by dynamically controlling RU states. The achievement shows substantial energy savings through intelligent network resource management, proving the effectiveness of ML-based optimization in O-RAN architectures.
